Ba da Bing!

10/20/11 11:30PM
Its Greek's fault I haven't updated the website for so long. Now that I've shifted the blame from my lazy butt to someone who is completely blameless, onto Ultimate news.

Those of you on the listserv or that frequent score reporter (aka 98% of you) should already know this, but Burn won Hucks off the Hilltop two weekends ago. There were a few hiccups along the way and there is definitely room for improvement, but the season is off to an excellent start. There are awesome pictures from the tournament available from Ultiphotos.

Second Degree's season has also begun. They attended their first tournament, the Matt Baccary Memorial, last weekend in Richmond. I believe they went 2-5 (the tradition of the webmaster not getting info from Second Degree continues...) but played better against some A teams than their record indicates.

This weekend sees both Burn and Second Degree on the road again. Burn is going to Wolfpack Invite in Raleigh NC while Second Degree is going up to Lake Fairfax to participate in the Patriot Games. Good luck to both teams!

Next up:Bringing home some more hardware to put above the fireplace in the Ultimate house

First Tournament this Weekend!!!

10/4/11 11:30PM
Burn and Second Degree have been practicing hard the past couple weeks and are getting ready to go to their first tournaments. Burn will be in Reston VA for Hucks off the Hilltop this weekend, and Second Degree is going to Richmond next weekend for a tournament. If I'm feeling ambitious I'll post results Saturday and Sunday night for those who don't get The Ocho at home.

Hasta la vista Alumni

9/14/11 12:00AM
Alumni weekend came and went, with the Alumni beating the undergrads 16-14 in a close game. I'm pretty sure we were all winners at the party. Thanks for coming to visit alumni, its always good to see you back in the Burg!

The final cuts for the A team were made last week, and the roster has been updated on the website. Congrats to everyone who made it! I'll get a B team (still 2nd Degree?) roster up as soon as I get one. There is also a sexy new Google calendar on the website on the practice schedule page, though it also has things other than practice times/dates on there. Greek is really proud of himself for making it so you should definitely check it out. B team events are also on there.

IMPORTANT NOTE

Practice times are different now, starting this week. We now have practice at the Rec Fields on Tuesdays from 8-10PM and Wednesdays from 7-9PM. On Thursdays we still meet on the Drillfield at 5PM. This is all in the Google calendar

See you all at practice

Alumni Weekend!

9/8/11 4:30PM
Its that time of year again, where the illustrious Burn Alumni return to Blacksburg (unless of course they are still here) in an attempt to reassert their ultimate and party dominance over the current team members. Full details for the game can found on the Facebook event page and details for extracurricular activites I'm sure will be sent over the listserv. If you aren't on the listserv email the captains and they will tell you how to sign up for it.

Today is also the last day of tryouts for the A team. Good luck to everyone trying to make it!

Return of the Ultimate

8/22/11 11:00PM
The fall semester has begun, and that means its time for Ultimate to begin! The first practice is tomorrow (Tuesday the 23rd). There will be practice every Tuesday and Thursday at 5:00PM on the Drillfield by the big oak in front of Burress followed by team dinner at Owens dining hall. Everyone is welcome, even if you've never played before. Come out and find out what the sport is all about! As always you can contact the captains at their email.

See everyone on the field tomorrow!

Summer

7/24/11 8:30PM
To recap this past spring semester, we went 31-10 (not including High Tide), including winning Hellfish Bonanza, coming in second at the Wahoo Challenge and Virginia Conference Championship, and making it to semifinals of College Regionals. The semifinal loss to UNC-W was one of the most intense and exciting games I have ever witnessed. Burn came back from a 8-2(or 3) half time deficit to tie it 10-10 before cap went on. The sideline energy was increased with help from the William and Mary, Towson, and the VT Women's teams all rooting for us. Unfortunately we couldn't complete the comeback, and were sent home still dreaming of that elusive trip to Nationals. Scores from all our tournaments this past season can be found on the Results page.

Spring also saw the usual slew of team events. There was the annual Margarita Party (curse you tequila) and end of year disc golf tournament/grill-fest and eating too much at The Homeplace on reading day. We also elected two new captains, Josh Reynolds and John Andrukonis. Congrats guys! Feel free to spam their email with spammy stuff.

Burn players have also met to go to several tournaments this summer, using Colby and canine inspired names. We finished fourth at the River City Lights in Richmond against some strong Club competition, and today we just brought home the gold medal (literally) from the Commonwealth games in Roanoke!

Summer League also finished last weekend, with the Dark Blue team winning the championship (again). Pickup is still taking place Tuesdays and Thursdays on the Drillfield at 6PM. Everyone is welcome to join us, even if you have never played before and just want to see what ultimate is all about. We do have a women's team so ladies are welcome to join us for pickup as well.

Next up:What do you mean its almost August already?

WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS

3/2/11 11:00 AM
And we'll keep on fighting to the end...

I'll stop singing now. Last weekend Burn went to Hellfish Bonanza and went undefeated to WIN A TOURNAMENT! WOOOHOOO! More importantly we also won the party. I wasn't there Saturday (College Gameday and the Duke game were awesome) but I hear we rolled teams fairly easily. Sunday we threw some of our patented zone-d to win our three games and get the monkey off our back.

The B team, who have renamed themselves Second Degree (and have some sweet jerseys) went to an UOA 8 tournament last weekend where they competed against 7 A teams. Though they went 0-7 in pool play, they beat Messiah in their placement game 9-4 to take 7th place. Good job Second Degree!

Going back a little further Burn finished in 9th place at Queen City Tune Up. The tournament had some definite highs and lows. We were up 8-2 (or something like that) on App St. at half time, including two Callahans, but let them come back way too strong. We then carried the poor play over into ECU and were unable to win on universe point. Against Ohio St we rested most of our starters, and for the crossover game against Clemson were able to come out hard and win. Sunday morning we started playing Michigan, and we basically shot ourselves in the foot around halftime, making several mistakes and not keeping up the defensive intensity, losing 10-15. We cruised through our next three games to finish 9th.

Meanwhile in Harrisonburg that same weekend, Second Degree was competing at Smellfish Bonanza. Despite losing a game or two on Saturday, they rallied to win the championship over UNC-B. For those of you keeping track at home, thats a sweep of Bonanza tournaments by Burn teams this year.

Next up:Easterns Qualifier in Wilmington, NC. SPRING BREAK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Updates:

The tournament schedule has been changed to reflect that we are NOT going to UOA 8s this spring, and instead are going to a tournament at UVA the first weekend in April. Added results.

The Season Begins

2/6/11 3:30 PM
Apologies to our massive fan base for not updating very often (okay, at all) at the end of last semester. I'll try to do better this semester. Anyway, Burn finished 2nd at UOA ACC's and thus qualified for UOA Nationals. In between we went to Wolfpack where we finished 2nd, only losing to UNC-W in the finals. We went to Boone as always, this years theme being "Cartoon Action Hero Crews". As always great times ensued. At UOA Nationals we finished 2nd. Burn won a huge game over national power Pitt on game point in pool play, but couldn't duplicate the feat in the championship game. All of these results are now up on the results page. Krull sent out an awesome semester summary I'm going to put up shortly.

Burn has already been to its first tournament of the spring, ACC's at Chapel Hill. Burn went in as the overall 1 seed, and swept pool play going 4-0 on Saturday, but lost in semi's to Georgia Tech.

Next up:Queen City Tune Up in Charlotte, NC.

Updates:

Updated the tournament schedule for the spring. Added all the results from the fall. One of these days I'm going to put up pictures.

Road to UOA Nationals

10/16/10 9:00 PM
Lots of new developments in the last few weeks. At Club Open sectionals we went 5-3 for the weekend. Good to see the alumni that came out to play with us. We ended up not actually having a first round bye though. Those results are up on the result page.

Last week were tryouts for the A team. Congrats to all the guys who made the team. Mike Meholic and Jaryd Engberg were elected B team captains.

This weekend the A team is in Greenville SC for the UOA 8's ACC tournament. The B team split in to two teams and came along to play some other B teams. The A team had a pretty awesome Saturday, winning four games with a combined point differential of 60-15. I don't have exact details for how the B team did but I'm pretty sure they ran train on some other B teams. Tomorrow the A team has games against Clemson and UVA (both of whom are 4-0) and Duke. If They finish as one of the top two teams they get to go to UOA Nationals in Myrtle Beach later this year.

Updates:

Added new roster (B team roster coming soon) for the semester and results from open sectionals and Saturday at UOAs. Attempting to get up pictures from open sectionals.

Club Season

9/24/10 10:00 AM
Tournaments are beginning! Some of the guys teamed up with the womens team (codename Mey Mey Fresh & the DGCs) to go to mixed club sectionals September 11-12. They went 3-3 winning some close games.

This weekend the mens are sending a team to open sectionals (codename Mae Mae Fresh Experience) to ruin some club teams' season. Apparently we don't have a game till 11 on Saturday morning, when we get to test our metal against Truck Stop who went to club nationals last year. Sweet.

Hopefully our football team doesn't suck this weekend...

The Season is Underway!

8/29/10 7:00 PM
Burn just finished up an awesome first week of practices, with plenty of new people coming out. We had our beginning of the season meeting today where we went over our tentative tournament schedule (now up on the tournaments page) and set our goals for the fall. New guys keep showing up and if you haven't started playing but want to learn how to play feel free to come out and join us Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5 on the drillfield.

This coming weekend is Alumni weekend for Burn, with a game against the alumni on Saturday September 4th at 1pm.

First Practice

8/18/10 11:30 PM
The season is getting ready to begin! There is pickup tomorrow (Thursday) on the drillfield at 5 and Sunday at 1. The first practice is Tuesday the 24th at 5. For those of you who are new, we meet under the big oak tree on the drillfield (look for all the flying discs).

August

8/4/10 12:30 PM
Some updates from the summer are probably in order. In July Burn sent a team to Queen City Tune Up in Charlotte, along with some guys from Roanoke and South Carolina (go cocks?) along with guest appearances from Tater and Clapman. Despite not warming up at all and never running a single drill we beat some teams and gave some of those old club guys a run for their money. The Results are up on the Results page.

Summer league also came to a close with Blue going from 4th place to 1st in the span of 3 days. Pickup is still occurring on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6pm on the Drillfield.

Summer Time

6/4/10 10:00 PM
Burn has been busy in the past month and a half. We managed to send a squad of 12 to regionals despite it being the same weekend as finals and 12 hours away. They put up a good fight considering lack of subs and the Florida heat. The end of the year meeting also took place. Rookie and Troy were elected as captains for next year, and Alex Krull is the new historian, congratulations gentlemen. We also said goodbye to another group of alumni. Thank you class of 2010 for all you have given this team.

Summer league in Blacksburg has started (see link in navbar) and there is still pickup on Tuesdays at 6 on the drillfield. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to come out and play.

If anyone has pictures or videos from this season, feel free to email me with them, or give them to me at summer league.

Next up:Not having homework till August!

Updates:

Added regionals and finished sectionals results. Updated the tournaments page. Added to the Alumni page.

Burn is going to Regionals!

4/10/10 11:00 PM
The A team has made it to the championship game of Sectionals and as such is guaranteed to finish 3rd at the lowest. They play Virginia at 1:00 tomorrow. The B team went 0-3 in pool play but beat JMU-B to end the day.

In older news, the A team went 4-4 at Easterns against some very good teams the last weekend in March. The B team split into X and Y and went to Radford for a tournament that same weekend, and didn't do so well due to lack of subs and handlers. Results from these two tournaments and from Sectionals Saturday are now up on the results page.

Next up:A team in championship game against UVA on Sunday April 11, B team cleaning up on some other B teams.

Season Update

3/25/10 9:30 AM
First up some results from tournaments. The A team went 3-3 at Ultimax at the end of February, and went 7-1 losing to Notre Dame in the championship game at UOA 8's. The B team went 2-5 at Chucktown Throwdown the last weekend in February but rebounded to go 6-1 at Beasterns this past weekend. Full results will be up on the results page. Its amazing what being able to have a few practices can do.

The site "Movin' On Up" has done a pretty sweet preview of the A team going into Easterns this weekend. It can be found here. The date/place for sectionals has also been set; it will be taking place on April 10-11 in Knoxville Tennessee.

Next up: A team to Wilmington this weekend for Easterns and the B team to Radford for a tournament.

Snow, Snow, Go Away

2/22/10 9:30 AM
Come again another day. Sunday was the first time we were able to have practice in about two weeks due to all the snow. Hellfish Bonanza at JMU was also canceled due to weather, and Saturday and Sunday at Vegas were canceled due to the rain.

Next up: Ultimax for the A team and Chucktown Throwdown for the B team this weekend.

New Year

1/30/10 12:15 AM
Some catching up is probably in order. Boone was....well, it was Boone. About 40 of us went, all dressed up as Nintendo characters. Pictures will hopefully be available soon. Despite an early exit by both teams on Sunday morning, it was a great end to the fall season. We also had our end of the semester meeting, where we recapped the year and went over our goals (ruckus at nationals) for the next semester. It was also unveiled that we got sponsored by Five Ultimate! So thanks to the people at Five!

The B team elected two captains over break: Scott Webster and Brendan Karlstrand. Congrats guys!

The A team was supposed to travel to the ACC Championship tournament this weekend but it was canceled due to weather.

Next up: Vegas! (Feb 5-7)

Updates:

Added a link Five Ultimate in the links menu. Added the Spring schedule (as of now) for the A and B teams.

Great Job X & Y Teams at Radford!

11/11/09 1:45 AM
Our B team split up into X and Y counterparts to participate in the Radford Por El Rio. The teams finished in 2nd and 4th places, respectively. Both teams met in the semifinals with the X team coming out the victor, *15- 12. One note to learn from: never throw Paper. With the 3rd/4th place game for team Y to be decided on an old fashioned RPS best-of-three series, our very own Adam Rupert decided to throw Scissors, Paper, Paper while the opponent threw triple Scissors. It was a rookie mistake which granted him the nickname Paper.

The finals matchup between Huckstables and VT X was a good one. Huckstables dominated the first half, taking it at 8-3. The second half started similarly to the first half, with Huckstables leading 12-5. VT X went on a run, bringing the game as close as 13-10, but eventually fell short in a 15-12 loss. Overall, it was a great weekend for both teams. Keep up the hard work Burn!

*On game point for team X (14 - 9), they allowed team Y to continue play after a dropped pull. Team Y then scored 3 straight points, making the game much closer.

Next up: Boone 2009
